The Lancaster Brewery is located in the heart of Amish Country.
Their beers have a fresh taste as though the area where it’s created somehow gets brewed right into the beer itself.
The Milk Stout is among their most popular.
A Milk Stout contains lactose, which is the sugar found in milk.
They are also called Cream Stouts or Sweet Stouts. Their sweetness is a result of the inability of the beer’s yeast to breakdown the lactose giving it a creamy, sweet texture and taste.
Milk stouts are the one type of beer that is actually recommended to nursing mothers because they contain nutrients beneficial to the baby. (See Wikipedia “Milk Stout” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stout)
Mackeson Stout is perhaps the most recognizable in our area. However, I have found the Lancaster to be the most memorable.
The alcohol content is moderate (5.30 ABV) and there is little to no back-end bitterness. If you’re looking for some bite and a strong buzz this probably isn’t the beer for you, but if you want a dark and rich drinking beer that won’t spoil your palate, Lancaster Milk is the way to go.
