The documentary Beer Wars has been out for about a year, but this was my first chance to view the film at the closing night of The New York Food Film Festival.
What an event for a first viewing. Labeled “Brooklyn’s Burger n’ Beer Garden”, the closing ceremony of the festival was an event for the burger eating and beer drinking ages. Set against the backdrop of the stunning Brooklyn Bridge at the Tobacco Warehouse, Whole Foods, Pat La Frieda and Burger Maker supplied an “all you can eat” burger-delicious fest with possibly the world’s longest topping bar (boasting such varied treats as bacon, peanut butter, and fish sauce to top your meat with).
There was no shortage of beer to sample with your beef. Breweries such as Stone, Shmatlz, Palm, Gaffel Kolsch, Dogfish Head, and New Century were in attendance. Of course, the best part being – along with the unlimited meat came the unlimited beer!
Director Anat Baron, featured documentary subjects Sam Calagione (Founder and Head of Dogfish Head) and Rhonda Kallman (founder and CEO of New Century Brewing), were all in attendance. Even Mayor Mike Bloomberg stopped in to share a brew with Calagione and munch on the tasty burgers.
But at the heart of the large event was Beer Wars, an insider’s perspective of the battles independent craft brewers face against the powerful corporations dominating the American beer industry.
I got a chance to speak with Baron, Calagione, and Kallman. I was impressed by the sheer grit and passion they have to spread great tasting beer throughout the country. In my opinion, Beer Wars is an excellent documentary about the very frustrations drinkers and fans of craft beer grapple with – the struggle to get the wider beer drinking public to appreciate good beer.
Baron’s goal in creating the documentary was to garner motivate us craft drinkers to not just drink great beer, but also to spread the word about it. Beer Wars is now available out on DVD. So, you craft beer drinkers out there, make an event out of watching this film. Throw a viewing party with friends and supply them with amazing beer that’ll keep them searching for more.

Great Post Celena. Even Billionaire Mayors love Dogfish.
That’s some good beat reporting. Also, that shot of Mayor Bloomberg came out great. It almost looks like he is “grubbing” for another sample of DFH Indian Brown Ale. Please sir, can I have some more.
Nice post – I’m bummed I missed the event.
would have been more appropriate if bloomberg was drinking dogfish head’s midas touch…
Lol! I’m just surprised Bloomberg made it all the way out to Brooklyn. Did he ride the subway “as usual”?
Thanks, ak, Jesse! Hg, I wish Bloomberg did drink the Midas. Andrew, if he rode the subway, his million bodyguards did too!
