The Makings of a Great Beer Bar: Sycamore Bar and Flower Shop

Sycamore Bar and Flower Shop is not the typical beer bar.  It may even be argued that its beer menu is too short to fall under such a category, but I believe that my regular neighborhood beer-drinking haunt deserves to be ranked in New York City’s top beer drinking establishments.

Here’s why:

1.) Sycamore has managed to beautifully combine the flower shop aspect of the business by offering the only $10 beer and bouquet special in town. Drawing in unlikely drinking clientele from the street with their array of original and daring blossoms, people are pleasantly surprised to discover the chic and comfortable bar beyond the shop.  Such a distinction has garnered it notice from notable publications such as Draft and The Village Voice.

2.) Sycamore may not have the multitude of taps and bottles to choose from as The Blind Tiger or the Ginger Man, but it boasts a solid selection of eight taps that include choices such as Duvel Green, Allagash White or Bear Republic’s Big Bear Black Stout. In bottle selection, there’s the Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA or the Ayinger’s Celebrator Dopplebock to appreciate.

3.) The Brooklyn bar has recently built a second bar out in their roomy and sunny backyard to include five more beers on tap.  What distinguishes this outside collection of brew is the fact that these beers are specifically selected from one brewery that is featured at their regular summer Saturday BBQs. Each week, the Sycamore drinking patrons get to enjoy and learn about beer from great breweries such as Kelso, North Coast, Dogfish Head, and Avery.

4.) The bartenders are some of the friendliest in town. They are happy to answer any questions you might have about beer, and if you’re a regular, they quickly become friends.

5.) Sycamore is playing home to events such as The Brooklyn Wort, a homebrew competition that will take place on August 21st.  The prize is a $1,000 and the judges include Kelly Taylor from Kelso of Brooklyn, Justin Philips from Beer Table, Ben Granger from Bierkraft, Jay Steinhauer from American Beer Distributing, Danielle Cefaro from Brooklyn Homebrew, and Craig Frymark from Sixpoint Craft Ales.

Whether you’re a beer enthusiast or a beer novice, Sycamore is a bar that has a little bit of everything to please both camps. It provides a great beer selection, events to help you learn more about beer, and even inspires you to make some of your own.

Excellent Article, Celena! Your description of it makes me very jealous that I am not based in New York; this place sounds amazing.
