Good news for New Yorkers and any beer drinker willing to road trip. The brewers from Dogfish Head and Russian River are teaming up with Mario Batali (through his B&B Hospitality Group with Joe Bastianich) and the two Italian breweries, Birrificio Le Baladin and Birra del Borgo to create an unbelievably revolutionary Brewpub in the coolest city on earth… New York!
The idea is to have a brewery on premise where these artisan brewers can brew beers to pair with their dishes created by Batali. According to the Dogfish website the restaurant is to be called Eataly. Get it? Italy. Eatlay.
Eataly will be located at 200 5th Avenue and have views of the Empire State Building and the Flatiron Building. The collaborators are planning to have the rooftop brewery and restaurant open by summer of 2010. From what we know about Dogfish Head and Russian River this is something worth getting excited about. These two brewers have brought us so many interesting and mind bending beers. Sam Calagione, the head brewer for Dogfish Head is an mad scientist when it comes to brewing. He has thrown in so many different ingredients and styles of brewing to his beers some would think was crazy, but not us we love em!!! Vinnie Cilurzo of Russian River also packs a punch in his brews. His brews Pliny the Younger, and Pliny the Elder are some of the most loved and respected IPA‘s out there. New Jersey just saw that Vinnie knows how to collaborate, with the release of the awesome kick ass Collaboration not Litigation ale from Russian River and Avery Brewing Co.
This brewpub will also give us a chance to get a taste of the exploding Italian craft brew scene. I personally have not tasted anything from Teo Musso, brewmaster of Birrificio Le Baladin or Leonardo Di Vincenzo, brewmaster of Birra del Borgo. Birra del Borgo does have some brews such as the Re Ale Extra being sold throughout the U.S. in about a half a dozen states, PA, and NY being two.
The coolest thing about this brewpub is the fact that four different brewers will being pouring their hearts and souls into the beers we get the fortunate opportunity to taste. Collaborations give these brewers the chance to feed off one another. These brewers will be collaborating on beers that are not only interesting in their own rights, but will also be designed to be paired with food…It’s Amore!!!
The four brewers are working together on recipes for Eataly’s house beers. Those beers will feature Italian and American ingredients. The beers will be unpasteurized, unfiltered, naturally carbonated, and hand-pulled through traditional beer engines for the most authentic and pure presentation.
The beer being brewed right on premise also gives us a real advantage because the beer will be spanking new. If were lucky, Dogsish will brew their Randall the Enamel Animal, a hop infuser which runs fresh tap beer through a cone like filter containing fresh hops (or any other ingredient you wish) to give your mouth an extra kick of clean refreshness that tantalizes your taste buds.
This restaurant is going to be a new and exciting addition to the New York City beer scene. Since so many of us already love Dogfish and Russian River and have not yet had the chance to taste the brewers from Italy it will be thrilling to get a taste of Eataly. And if all goes well, by the end of the summer myself and many other tri-staters will be lounging on a rooftop at 200 5th Avenue sipping on a great brew with a plate of delicious Eatalian food.
